Using a flint axe to fell a 42cm (~17”) diameter aspen. Progress after 300 cuts!

It took approximately 25 minutes to chop down this tree. I chopped at a steady pace with short breathers.

 

 

 

 

 

The head of the axe is made of flint from Falster in Denmark, of the thick-necked kind, the handle is made from Yew.

Thick-necked axe with a Wych-elm handle.
Thick-necked axe with a Hazel handle.
Here I used pitch to fill out the actual opening.
Thin-necked axe with a Hazel handle.

Two thick-necked axes bound with rawhide thonging.
The bottom one is a transverse axe.
The handles are made from Chestnut.
